Our first Italian excursion...Venice! Considering it is only a short train ride away, Caleb and I followed the advice of one of his IP's and took a weekend jaunt to Venice. And what a weekend it was!!
It was amazing to see the canals and the intricate way the city was built, not to mention mind blowing that people can actually live there and make it back to their homes each night! We spent all of Saturday walking around and exploring the city, eating in cafes, and touring the Doge's Palace- Palazzo Ducale.
The Venetian history is interesting and rich, and something that neither of us knew much about. We stayed in a quaint bed and breakfast (with the steepest 3 flights of stairs we have EVER climbed...especially in humidity!) on Saturday night, and got up bright and early Sunday to make it to the church, Santa Maria della Salute. An awe inspiring church, the St. Maria was built to celebrate the end of the plague in Venice. It is not the most ornate church in the area, but it was honest and beautiful in it's own right. Although there was much more to be seen, we decided to save the rest of the city for subsequent visits. After all, Rome wasn't built in a day...
